Entertaining Ages 2-5

The first few days as a baby-sitter or nanny can be thrilling and exhausting. But as you settle into a routine, it can be difficult to plan fun and educational daily activities. At the beginning of each week, consider making an activity plan for the children so that your days will be well-planned and the children can be well-entertained. Here are some activities to consider for children aged 2 to 5.

Preschoolers are curious, bossy and incredibly hyper. They love learning about the world around them and love the opportunity to do things themselves with as little adult intervention as possible. Some ideal activities for this age range include:

Indoor

  • Involved crafts like painting on an easel, painting with pudding, making people out of felt, making finger puppets, making simple storybooks, and even simple cooking.
  • Attending story time at the library or a local bookstore.
  • Reading books together and memorizing funny songs and nursery rhymes
  • Playing simple musical instruments like kazoos, toy pianos, and recorders
  • Playing make believe games-dressing up in costumes, pretending to be a monster, and putting on skits with stuffed animals
  • Playing chase games and hide and seek
  • Any activities that encourage new friendships and social development

Outdoor

  • Outings to the zoo, park, sporting events and playgrounds
  • Playing simple sports like miniature golf, t-ball, and kickball
  • Simple scavenger hunts outside
  • Playing chase games and hide and seek
  • Catching lightning bugs and learning about the small animals they see outside every day
  • Chasing squirrels (but not anywhere near a road!)
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Playing hopscotch
  • Making a pet rock
  • Birdwatching and making up stories about what they see
  • Any activities that encourage new friendships and social development
