Babysitter Interview Questions

As a parent or guardian, it is only natural that you want to find the right babysitter to look after your children. Even with glowing references, you still want to find out for yourself if this is a ‘good fit’. You can do so by asking the right questions during a babysitter job interview. By breaking down some of the most important babysitter interview questions, you can be sure that you have all the important information that you need before you entrust your children with a new babysitter for the first time.

Tell me a bit more about yourself?

This is an important question for a babysitter job interview. Remember that personality wise, a babysitter has to mesh with your children. Just because a babysitter is safe or punctual does not matter if your kids are uncomfortable around them. You want to make sure that the babysitter has a positive influence on your household. Ask about disciplinary style and how this particular babysitter will handle certain situations to get a better feel for their character.

What is the experience level?

Can you imagine a list of babysitter interview questions without this one? Who have you babysat before and where? This allows you to understand whether your potential babysitter has a good grasp on the babysitting basics. Not only that, but it tells you a bit more about their personality because you can ask how long they normally work with every family. Some important questions are:

  • “Tell me a bit more about your experience as a babysitter”
  • “How old were the children in your previous job(s)?”
  • “How long have you worked with each family?”
  • “Do you have any certifications or formal training in early childcare?”

What are you capable of doing?

This is often overlooked during a babysitter job interview, but it is still one of the more important babysitter interview questions. You do not want to hire a babysitter who is scheduled to look after an infant but is incapable of changing a diaper. This also means asking if the babysitter understands what to feed certain age groups and recognizes the basics and necessities. You can ask questions such as:

  • “Do you know how to perform CPR?”
  • “Have you ever had to administer medicine to children?”
  • “Have you experienced emergency situations before? If so, how did you respond?”

Be sure to ask about availability

Yet another question during the babysitter job interview that parents often overlook. Sure, you might have found the perfect babysitter, but if they are only available to work once in a blue moon, chances are that this is not a good fit. You want to make sure that they are available when you need them most. Ask questions such as:

  • “Are you working right now? If so, why are you looking for another position?”
  • “When are you able to start?”
  • “Outside of childcare, do you have any other plans or responsibilities?”

Why would you want to work for me?

You want to include this amongst your babysitter interview questions, what can this person bring to the table that sets them apart from the others. This has to be a good fit for everyone involved, not just you, not just the children, not just the babysitter – all three parties have to be comfortable.

How much do you expect to be paid?

This is important to discuss beforehand, because the last thing you want to do is create friction after a positive babysitter job interview. Remember that you not only discuss hourly pay, but also discuss other aspects such as overtime pay, what happens if you have to cancel at the last moment, etc.

Looking for other interview questions?

Of course there are other babysitter interview questions that you might want to ask. Remember that you discuss additional responsibilities, family discipline, days and hours of work, and anything else that you think is important to ask. Finally, always make sure to ask for references as well. Good luck in your babysitter search!
